Standard Photo Dimensions & Presets
Different authorities and portals specify different crop ratios. Here are the most widely used standards supported by our studio tool:
| Photo Format | Dimensions (mm) | Dimensions @ 300 DPI | Common Applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Indian Passport | 35 × 45 mm | 413 × 531 px | Recruitment portals (SSC, UPSC, State PSC), Driving Licenses, College IDs |
| Square VISA (2×2 inch) | 51 × 51 mm | 600 × 600 px | US Visa, International Travel, Certain Embassy Applications |
| Stamp / Admit Card Photo | 25 × 35 mm | 295 × 413 px | School registers, specialized admit cards, membership slips |
Framing & Facial Composition Guidelines
A great passport photo requires proper framing:
- Face Coverage (70–80%): The distance from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head should occupy roughly 70% to 80% of the photo's total vertical height.
- Eye Level: Eyes should be positioned horizontally level, roughly two-thirds of the way up the image.
- Shoulder Balance: Both shoulders should be equally visible with the subject looking straight into the camera lens.
- Neutral Expression: Neutral facial expression with both ears visible and eyes open without hair covering the face.

Background Selection: White vs. Light Blue
Most modern Indian recruitment portals (such as Staff Selection Commission and Railway Recruitment Boards) specifically mandate a plain, light-colored background—predominantly pure white or light sky blue.
Taking photos against uneven home curtains or dark walls creates shadows that can fail automated validation checks. Using AI Photo Studio Pro's client-side background removal instantly isolates the person and fills the background with formal pure white (#ffffff) or soft blue (#dbeafe).
Printing Multiple Photos on 4×6 Inch Photo Sheets
Printing individual 35×45mm photos one by one on large paper wastes expensive photo sheets. Standard photographic paper comes in 4×6 inch (102 × 152 mm) size:
- At 35×45mm dimensions with 2mm cutting gaps, a 4×6 inch sheet fits exactly 8 passport photos arranged in a 2-column by 4-row grid.
- On an A4 document sheet (210 × 297 mm), you can fit up to 30–36 passport photos for batch student registrations.
- Adding a thin 1px black cutting border (stroke) makes it much easier to cut each picture straight using scissors or a photo die-cutter.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Selfie Distortions: Taking close-up selfies with a front mobile camera causes wide-angle facial distortion (large nose, recessed ears). Take the photo from at least 4–5 feet away with a 2× telephoto or standard rear camera.
- Heavy Digital Filters: Never apply beauty smoothing or artificial color filters. Skin tones should look natural.
- Glossy Reflections on Eyeglasses: Heavy flash glare covering the applicant's pupils is a common reason for rejection. Tilt glasses slightly downward or photograph without glasses if permitted.
